Drinking Water Common Pollutants
Hydro Quad® Water Processors: If water drinking is so good for you, then why is so much of the world’s water contaminated?
That sounds like a contradiction. The truth is that good, clean water is very good for you but drinking poorly filtered water containing contaminants and other unhealthy elements is not so good.
There are studies conducted on a regular basis by many different environmental groups and municipalities. They must ensure that the water they provide to residents is potable and healthy with only acceptable levels of minerals and toxins.
Some of the contaminants that leach into a drinking water supply system just seep in from the watershed. Agricultural pesticides and other chemicals used in farming soak into the ground and end up in the water. Industrial wastewater treatment plants sometimes have runoff that goes into the water system. Infants, children, and the elderly are particularly vulnerable to these contaminants.
An acceptable level of toxins when set by a country’s or a city’s standards may not be acceptable to you. If you are particularly sensitive to toxins or have allergies you may not want to ingest any toxins. Some choose to purchase their own water filtration systems that provide a better filter for whatever drinking water is used by their households. This is more of a sure way to be certain of what you are drinking.
Contaminants typically found in municipal drinking water systems are from agricultural pollution, urban population center pollution, industrial pollution, and water treatment agents that cause a small amount. Contaminants found include microorganisms, pesticides, sediment, and other toxins.
The presence of minerals in the water can be healthful, but can also become unhealthy if there is too much of it. Drinking iron laden water from a well, for example, is known to cause a buildup in the kidneys that can lead to the formation of painful kidney stones. Water containing high levels of calcium can cause the same problems. If you live in a rural area and get your drinking water from a well, you may want to install a filter to clear out your drinking water.
You can have your water tested by looking in the local phone book and finding a water testing facility. In many areas the rural university agricultural extension office can help you. They either do the testing or know of someone who does it. You will be instructed to collect a sample of your water and for a small fee you can have it analyzed for the contents.
